Multiple-exposure photographs capture what it is to know a place.
Doug Keyes creates a rich sense of place with multiple-exposure photographs that render complex experiences in a single image. "The layering of information over time creates a condensed portrait of places our senses have adapted to, places that we no longer 'see,' even though we experience them every day," he says.
International District and Rainier capture two urban Seattle neighborhoods. They belong to a larger series called Becoming Language, which is composed of multiple-exposure photographs taken in San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, the California Redwoods, Tacoma, Paris, and elsewhere. Based in Seattle since 1988, Keyes is interested in how knowledge accumulates over time, leaving an impression or forming a collective memory. His work is held in many public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Berkeley Art Museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Keyes has been honored with a multitude of awards, including the Ned Behnke Fellowship, Photolucida's Photographer of the Year, and the Juror's Choice Awards from the Tacoma Art Museum Biennial. A monograph of Keyes' work, Collective Memory, was published in 2008 by Decode Books.
