‘Meeting at the Balance’ – ART OPPORTUNITIES IN FREEWAY PARK

  • Deadline:
  • Budget: $1000-$4000 artist stipends
  • Eligibility: This call is open to any artist or artist group, located in the Pacific Northwest, interested in creating illuminated artworks that will be displayed or performed in a public space, free to be seen by all. Established and emerging artists who live and/or work in Seattle’s center city neighborhoods and artists who are members of BIPOC communities are encouraged to apply.

The Freeway Park Association (FPA) seeks artists across disciplines to add inspiration and expression to Freeway Park, in Downtown Seattle beginning March 2025. Our 3rd light-art program, Meeting at the Balance will include short-term (90 day) illuminated public art installations throughout Freeway Park AND one-night-only pieces, performances and artist-led workshops to be showcased at a community celebration on March 20th, the spring equinox.

CONCEPT:
Using the equinox as a metaphor, we invite artists to take inspiration from the theme “Meeting at the Balance.” We chose the equinox because the changing light in our days is a universal and meaningful experience in our shared Northwest culture. We believe Seattle is “at the balance” or at a tipping point in various areas: revitalization, preservation, identity, creative empowerment, and honoring the value of public spaces. The theme is not rigid and can be interpreted with personal, interpersonal, cultural, or metaphorical perspectives. We are excited to see how Seattle creatives respond to this theme, in this historic, centrally-located park.

We are looking for both:
1. Short-term illuminated arts installations to be on view for 3 months from March to June;
2. dance, performance, single-day installations and artist-led workshops for our Spring Equinox event.
