“The N Word”
January 2-30, 2014
Opening: First Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Ronald Hall’s beautifully painted, memorable work revolves around confrontational subject matter. He is recognized for juxtaposing contemporary issues of race with recognizable events from African American history. His painting technique melds elements of digital imagery (used to first compose the paintings) with masterful draftsmanship and a skilled handling of paint.
Hall’s most recent paintings are a play on what he, as a young African American artist, recognizes as misrepresentations and misinterpretations of black people as they have been typically portrayed in western art. Appropriating black characters from a rich stock of European and Early American examples, Hall infuses his present-day reinterpretations with elements of humor. It’s his way of coping with the harsh reality of how people of color have been represented in Western European art from the 18th through the early 20th century.
