In 2008, King County’s Road Services Division identified 57 short-span bridges in need of replacement. A year later, Leo Saul Berk was selected to serve as the Bridge Unit’s artist-in-residence, tasked with exploring the design opportunities presented by each bridge and, ultimately, with creating a series of art and design elements as a kit of parts that Roads Services could select from, fabricate, and install. Berk spent six months studying the bridges—each between 20 and 110 feet long—before developing his artwork concepts, which aimed to reinforce awareness of the bridges and the creeks beneath them.
